About Jamilyn

Jamilyn began her music studies when she was 5 years old.  She played piano until the age of 12, when she found her real musical love- the cello.  Her parents made a deal with her that if they bought a cello for her to play, she would practice hard, get a scholarship, and let music pay for her college education.

In 2004, Jamilyn accomplished her goal, and began her studies with Anne Francis and the Fry Street Quartet at Utah State University on full scholarship.  There, she gained a deep love for chamber music, as well as teaching and performing with her cello.  She earned the title of Gold Level Teacher at the Utah State University Suzuki Strings Academy, studying pedagogy with Karin Hendricks and Carey Cheney.  She also taught beginning strings classes with  the Mountain West Strings Academy at Wellsville Elementary School.

After graduating from Utah State University with a Bachelors Degree in Cello Performance, Jamilyn continued to develop her teaching and performing skills at Western Michigan University.  As the teaching assistant to Cello Professor, Bruce Uchimura, she was able to teach lessons and technique classes to undergraduate cellists.  She also assisted in teaching Time Based Intermedia, an art class focused on mixing various mediums of performing and visual arts.  While in Michigan, she had the opportunity to collaborate with many exciting performing groups, including the South West Symphony, Twin City Players, And the faculty of Western Michigan University School of Music in the Bullock Performance Series.  She graduated from Western Michigan with her Masters of Music Degree in Cello Performance, with an emphasis in Music History in the spring of 2010.

Jamilyn returned to Salt Lake City in the fall of 2010 to begin work on her Doctorate of Musical art degree at the University of Utah.  She currently studies cello with John Eckstein, and chamber music with Gerald Elias.  As a member of the University of Utah Graduate String Quartet, she frequently performs recitals, as well as outreach presentations for public school music programs.  She has had the opportunity to perform with the Salt Lake Choral Artists, as well as the Salt Lake Chamber Players.  She has taught beginning strings at the Waterford School in Sandy, Utah and is currently a member of the adjunct faculty at Salt Lake Community College, teaching private cello lessons and Introduction To Music.  She also teaches cello and musicianship classes at the University Of Utah Preparatory Division.

Jamilyn loves teaching and playing the cello.  She has studied the Suzuki method and is Suzuki Teacher certified from Pre-Twinkle through book 5.  She is also very interested in the pedagogy of Paul Rolland, as well as the Alexander Technique.  She hopes that through her performing and teaching, she can help others find true joy in music!
