This beautiful piece was written by cellist David Popper at the death of his good friend and publisher. It was also performed at his own funeral. I am performing it, along with two of my favorite cello buddies, at Brittany Gardner's cello studio recital on August 25th. Let me know if you'd like to come, and I'll give you more details. In the mean time, listen to this slice of musical heaven.
This definitely sounds like one of those instances where undershift is greatly preferred. Interesting, looking at it from this new angle :) it is unfortunate that I'll never be able to see the word Popper again without instantly tagging the dreaded "etude" word on the end - you know how I just love those :) beautiful piece. He really knows how to manipulate those chords, doesn't he?
